The Wan Lai week
Why Pattaya’s Songkran comes late
Along the Chon Buri coast, each town holds its own Wan Lai after the national holidays. The name comes from a sand pagoda festival: villagers carried sand washed away by rivers and the sea back to their temples (being checked) (Thairath).
That makes Pattaya easy to combine with somewhere else. Spend 13 to 15 April in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, then come down for Naklua and Pattaya on the 18th and 19th.

Don’t splash monks, people on motorbikes or anyone who clearly wants to stay dry. National rules and fines are in our water fight guide.
Don’t ride during Wan Lai
Songkran 2026’s seven danger days saw 242 road deaths across Thailand, and motorcycles were in 64.55% of accidents on the last day (Road Safety Command Center via Thai PBS). A wet road and buckets of water don’t mix with a scooter.
Mind the roads after dark
Beach Road reopens at midnight (being checked). Cross carefully when traffic comes back.
Plan for the heat
