More than a week of events, not three days

Want it quieter? Saneh Art by Songkran was an outdoor art trail on the Songkran theme, 11–30 April 2026; sources disagree on which park (being checked). Or go to a temple in the morning, when families make merit and pour water over Buddha images: what the customs mean.

How busy it gets
Bangkok city hall counted people at 94 Songkran venues from 10 to 15 April 2026 (being checked).
4.95 million
across all 94 venues, against 2.56 million in the same days of 2025
1.53 million
at Siam Square, the busiest single place
1.47 million
at ICONSIAM, on the river
652,974

Source: Asia News Network, citing Bangkok city hall. For comparison, the government’s own 2025 counts: Sanam Luang 1,106,999, Khao San Road 459,737 and Silom Road 358,728 (thailand.go.th). The two years were counted differently, so compare places within a year, not across years.
Rules and safety
The rules on Bangkok’s water streets
On Silom Road in 2026 the city set five rules: no high-pressure water guns, no drinking or selling alcohol, dress politely, no powder or white clay, and don’t waste water (Thairath).
On Khao San Road the sale of powder and alcohol was banned and the crowd moved one way (being checked). Fines and the national rules are on the home page.
Stay off the roads
Bangkok had more Songkran road deaths than any other province in 2026: 21 (Thai PBS). Use the BTS and MRT, not a scooter.
Seal your phone and passport
Officials on Silom warned people to check their belongings because of theft in the crowd (Thairath). A waterproof pouch on a lanyard does both jobs.
Plan for the heat
April is Bangkok’s hottest month: the normal daily high is 35.6 °C (Thai Meteorological Department). Drink water, not just beer.
Medical emergency
Call 1669. In 2026 there were first-aid points along Silom Road (Thairath).
Where to stay in Bangkok for Songkran
Pick by what you want to be near. Roads close around the water streets, so a hotel near a BTS or MRT station saves you hours.
Silom and Sathorn
Walk to the Silom water street, then go back to dry off. BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Silom are at the Sala Daeng end.
Sukhumvit and Asok
Close to Benchakitti Park, the 2026 government festival site (BTS Asok, MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre). The 2027 venue is not confirmed.
Siam and Pathum Wan
Siam Square, Siam Paragon and CentralWorld, where the 2026 crowds were biggest. BTS Siam is where the two Skytrain lines meet.
Banglamphu (Khao San)
In the middle of it, and loud late. In 2026 nine roads around Khao San closed from noon to midnight, so cars cannot reach most hotels in the afternoon.

Questions people ask
When is Songkran 2027 in Bangkok?
The public holidays are Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April 2027. Bangkok starts early: in 2026 the first events opened on 10 April, three days before the holiday. The 2027 city programme has not been announced yet.
Where is the best place for Songkran in Bangkok?
Silom Road and Khao San Road are the official water streets, both closed to traffic and free to join. For something bigger and more mixed, Siam Square and the government festival also draw very large crowds; the 2026 counts are on this page.
Where is the Maha Songkran festival in 2027?
Not announced yet. The government festival, run by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, was at Benchakitti Park in 2026 and at Sanam Luang in 2025.
How do I get to Silom Road for Songkran?
Take the BTS to Sala Daeng or the MRT to Silom. In 2026 Silom Road was closed to traffic from the Sala Daeng intersection to the Nararam intersection.
What time does the water fight end in Bangkok?
Into the evening. In 2026 news reports put the end at 21:00 on Silom Road and 22:00 on Khao San Road; we are still checking both. The 2027 hours will be set nearer the date.
Can you drink alcohol on Silom or Khao San at Songkran?
Not on Silom. In 2026 drinking and selling alcohol were banned in the Silom event area. On Khao San Road the district office banned selling alcohol and powder, according to Thairath (still being checked).
Is Songkran in Bangkok safe?
The streets are crowded, so keep your phone and passport sealed and close. The real risk is the roads: Bangkok had more Songkran road deaths than any other province in 2026. Use the BTS and MRT, and call 1669 for a medical emergency.
